What is Hong Kong?

Hong Kong, is officially known as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China

Hong Kong is located on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta in East Asia.

Hong Kong is a very international place, with influences from all over the world. Hong Kong was formerly a colony of Great Britain. Hong Kong was under British control until 1997, when it was returned to China. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains a separate political and economic system apart from China.

Despite being part of China, Hong Kong really feels like it's own, unique place. The territory has it's own culture, history, customs, and it's own currency. In addition to this, the majority of Hong Kong people speak Cantonese, rather than Mandarin, which is spoken in mainland China.

Hong Kong has a population of over 7.5 million people. Comparing that to Canada, the city of Toronto has a population of around 5 million people.

While Hong Kong is a bustling, lively place, the actual size of the territory really quite small. It is only 1,104 square kilometres (426 sq mi). To put this into perspective, leaving from the City University campus in the morning, you could go on a day trip to anywhere in the territory. Hong Kong is super accessible!

Fun Facts about Hong Kong:

#1: Hong Kong has the most skyscrapers of anywhere in the world.
#2: Hong Kong has the world's longest life expectancy.
#3: Hong Kong may seem like a crowded, loud place, but in fact, less than 25% of the territory's landmass is developed. (There is lot's of green space in Hong Kong! - mountains, forests, wetlands, rainforest valleys)
