Arrival Info & Friendly Tips for your first week in Hong Kong

#1: Octopus Card

The most useful card in Hong Kong. Get one as soon as you can! Good to use for public transport (MTR, Bus, Ferry), at convenience stores (7-Eleven, Circle K).

Where to apply for your Octopus Card?

Student Development Services counter, R6024, 6th floor, Amenities Building, Kowloon Tong Campus. Tel: 3442 8090

- Ask for a Student Octopus Application Form.
- Bring your passport (and student card if you have it) to the counter with you. You will also be asked to attach a passport sized photo to your application.
- It would be good to bring a couple of extra passport-sized photos with you to Hong Kong.

The Student Octopus Application Form you should receive from the SDS Counter at City U.

Once you get the form, complete it. If asked on the form, select "Tai Wai Station" as your card pick-up destination. It is the nearest pick-up location to City U.

Remember to get your application form "endorsed" by the University. To do that, return to the SDS Counter to get the form stamped.
Remember to:
1. Fully complete the  MTR Student Octopus application form
2. Bring along your valid CityU Student ID card
3. Passport (or Hong Kong ID if you have one)
4. One recent color passport size photo

Take your Endorsed Student Octopus application form to Kowloon Tong MTR Station (go to the customer service desk)

Fees to apply for Student Octopus: $90 HKD ($15 CAD)

You will first get a "Temporary Student Octopus Card".
- The temporary card costs $70 HKD (just over $10 CAD). It comes with $20 HKD of prepaid usable value.
- The ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ can be returned/refunded when your new Octopus is collected or the “Student Status” on your Personalised Octopus is Activated.

The Temporary Student Octopus Card

After about 30 days from getting the Temporary Student Card, your personalized Student Octopus Card should be ready for pick-up. When you go to get your personalized Student Octopus Card, remember to bring with you:

1. Receipt for the Octopus Card given to you by MTR customer service (when you purchased your temporary card)
2. CityU student ID card
3. Passport (or Hong Kong ID if you have one)

#3: Banks

There are many different banks in Hong Kong, and ATM's are everywhere, so no trouble finding one.
I use RBC back in Canada, and I found that Heng Seng Bank and Bank of China (Hong Kong) were the best and easiest to use when taking out money. For some reason HSBC would not accept my RBC card at their ATM's.

Remember to be aware that when using a foreign card at the ATM's, you are charged a transaction fee (It costs you about $5 CAD every time you take money out). Taking out larger sums ($1500, $2000 HKD) at a time sounds risky, but it will save you money in the long run. Keep your extra cash in a secure place in your room.

Heng Seng Bank has a branch office with ATM's right on campus at City U. It is located next to the library in AC 1.
